Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a compound found naturally in the skin. Over time less hyaluronic acid is produced in the skin, adding to the loss of density and elasticity seen in aging and as a result of UV damage.
Dermal fillers harness the water-absorbing and holding capacity of hyaluronic acid and combine it with variable degrees of molecule cross-linking and HA acid density to create an adaptable product. HA binds to water, making it an ideal product for correcting wrinkles and folds, as it binds with the skin’s own water. We have selected our HA dermal fillers for their quality, performance and safety. Understanding the properties of HA dermal fillers and correct applications is crucial in producing a pleasing result.
HA fillers are beneficial to:
- Fill in lines around the eyes, nose and mouth
- Fill forehead wrinkles
- Contour the cheeks and jawline
- Plump lips
- Treat acne scars
- Correct facial asymmetry
Consultations
A consultation with our clinical team is essential to discuss suitability for any prescription product. It is an opportunity to discuss individual goals and expectations including alternative treatment options.
Patients do not need a referral.
Preparation
No preparation is required.
Procedure
HA dermal filler is injected into the skin by our doctor using a fine-gauge needle or cannula. Additional anaesthetic is not required, You can either sit or recline during treatment and the aftercare is minimal.
As with any injectable treatment, there can be discomfort during the procedure. Speak to your healthcare practitioner if you have any concerns.
Aftercare
For approximately 24 hours after treatment, avoid:
- strenuous activity
- extensive sun or heat exposure
- aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- alcoholic beverages
Exposure to any of the above can cause temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the injection site.
Follow-up may be required to review results and address any concerns
Results
The results are immediate. Mild swelling and bruising can occur shortly after the procedure. The final effect of HA dermal fillers is seen a few days after the treatment, when swelling has resolved and the filler has fully hydrated.
Duration of benefit
HA fillers last from 4 months to longer than a year. The duration depends on the filler type, location and variation in patient characteristics.
Risks
As with any medical treatment, complications may occur. The most serious but rare complication of dermal filler injection is blockage of the blood vessels which causes necrosis (death) of the tissues related to that vessel. The worst outcomes could be permanent scarring, stroke or blindness. These complications can be prevented by using safe injection techniques and equipping patients with knowledge to identify possible complications and supporting their access to urgent help. HA filler can be dissolved, relieving blockages to vessels and preventing serious complications.
Other risks include:
- injection site reactions (swelling and redness at the injection site/s)
- bruising and swelling
- redness
- itching
- tenderness
- less commonly there may be discolouration, hardening of the skin, lumps, numbness, dry lips
