PDO Threands

PDO (Polydioxanone) threads are a type of non-surgical cosmetic procedure used for facial rejuvenation and lifting. The threads are made of a biocompatible material called polydioxanone, which has been used in medical sutures for many years. PDO threads work by lifting and tightening the skin, promoting collagen production, and improving overall skin texture. There are two main types of PDO threads: short, fine threads, which stimulate collagen production, and longer barbed threads (‘lifting threads’), which physically lift and reposition sagging tissues.

Insertion of multiple Polydioxanone (PDO) mono threads creates a vectorial network, that acts as a support network for the skin tissue. The mono insertion provides an immediate visible tightening effect whilst stimulating natural collagen production within the skin. This then stimulates skin rejuvenation, bringing vitality, elasticity, and brighter skin tone and improves the appearance of minor wrinkles, nasolabial folds and saggy skin. it is effective in both facial and body treatments.

The embedded threads are gradually reabsorbed over a period of 3 to 4 months via biological absorption or hydrolysis.

The mono threads produce and increase collagen around the threads. Although the effects are immediately apparent, maximum tension is reached sometime later (between 2 to 3 months).

The result are long-lasting rejuvenation of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, which delays the natural ageing process by at least 9 to 12 months.

PDO mono threads are suitable to treat

  • Fine crepey skin, particularly under the eyes

  • Facial skin laxity, wrinkling and fine lies
  • Loss of jawline definition

  • Neck and décolletage wrinkling, sun damage and fine lines

  • Upper lip wrinkling

  • Thinner, dry skin types particularly after extended UV exposure

  • Maintenance of skin density from late 30’s

  • Peri-menopausal skin changes and collagen loss
  • Skin of advanced age

Benefits of PDO mono threads

  • Immediate effects that continue to improve over time

  • Long lasting benefits with annual repeat treatments

  • Improves skin integrity, working to amplify the results of other rejuvenation treatments

  • Counter-acts the effects of oestrogen deficiency on activity of fibroblasts and hyaluronic acid production in the skin
  • Very low rate of allergy or significant complications

Consultation

A consultation with our clinical team is essential to discuss suitability for PDO thread treatment and to discuss individual goals and expectations. Pre-procedure images will be taken for records.

Patients do not need a referral.

Preparation

The treatment area is cleansed, and a local anesthetic may be applied to minimise discomfort during the procedure.

Thread Insertion

Multiple (10 to 100) PDO threads are inserted into the skin using a thin needle.

Results

The effect of PDO threads develop over time by the stimulation of collagen production, enhancing the skin’s firmness and elasticity.

Duration of benefit

PDO threads emit their collagen stimulatory effect over several months and their skin tightening effects last 6-12 months.

Risks

  • Bruising and Swelling: Common side effects include bruising and swelling, which usually subside within a few days to a week.
  • Infection: Although rare, there is a risk of infection at the insertion sites. Proper hygiene and post-procedure care can help minimise this risk.
  • Small lumps: In some cases small areas of swelling can be seen where the thread is close to the skin surface and a small inflammatory reaction occurs. This resolves over time
  • Allergic Reactions: While PDO is generally well-tolerated, there is a minimal risk of allergic reactions.

Post-Procedure Care

  • Avoiding Strenuous Activity: Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities and excessive facial movements for a few days after the procedure.
  • Gentle Cleansing: Proper cleansing of the treated area is essential, but patients should avoid aggressive rubbing or massaging.
  • Avoiding Sun Exposure: Sun protection is crucial to prevent pigmentation changes and protect the skin during the healing process.
  • Follow-Up Appointments: Patients may need follow-up appointments to assess results and address any concerns.

It’s crucial to consult with a qualified and experienced medical professional to discuss individual risks, benefits, and expectations before undergoing PDO thread treatment.

PDO barbed lifting threads

Polydiaxonone lifting threads are barbed threads that are stronger and longer than the fine threads used for skin tightening and collagen stimulation. Lifting threads are used to lift sagging skin (particularly to the cheeks/jowls), raise the eyebrow, or sculpt the contour of the nose. To prevent complications such as thread visibility, puckering and perforation, skin must be of adequate density and strength. Generally, this treatment is limited to people of 60 years or less, though exceptions do apply. We use high quality threads with proven advantages over competitors including the strength of the barbs. The insertion of additional fixing threads further secures the lift achieved.

PDO lifting threads are suitable to treat

  • Skin laxity and cheek sagging/jowling
  • Lifting eyebrow contour
  • Altering nose contour
  • Neck laxity
  • Skin aged < 60 years (exceptions apply for high density skin types)

Benefits of PDO Lifting threads

  • Considered ‘non surgical face-lifts’ these threads avoid or delay surgical face lifting
Enable significant facial aesthetic changes (eg ‘cat’s eye’) that naturally return to normal over time
  • Results are instant
  • Collagen stimulation continues over time improving skin quality

Procedure

  • Consultation: A consultation with our clinical team is essential to discuss suitability for PDO thread treatment and to discuss individual goals and expectations. A plan for lifting thread placement is agreed, targeting the problem area, with realistic expectations regarding the degree of lift that can be achieved. The maximum lift is 1.5cm. Pre-procedure images will be taken for records.
  • Preparation: The treatment area is cleansed, and a local anaesthetic is used to minimise discomfort during the procedure. This can cause initial facial oedema (swelling from fluid) which improves within 24 hours.
  • Thread Insertion: The barbed threads are inserted into the skin using a cannula.
  • Results: The effect of lifting PDO threads is immediate, with further stimulation of collagen production over time, enhancing the skin’s firmness and elasticity.
  • Duration of benefit: The effects of PDO lifting threads last 12-18 months.

Risks

  • Bruising and Swelling: Common side effects include bruising and swelling, which usually subside within a few days to a week.
  • Pain: The movement of facial tissues results in discomfort that lasts several days. When relevant, patients are provided with a jaw tissue support to wear in the initial healing phase.
  • Infection: Although rare, there is a risk of infection at the insertion sites. Proper hygiene and post-procedure care can help minimise this risk.
  • Visible Threads: In some cases, the threads may become visible or palpable under the skin, leading to dissatisfaction.
  • Asymmetry: It is natural for faces to be asymmetrical. Additional appearance of asymmetry may result in unequal lift achieved by the threads. This tends to stabilise over time.

Chewing harder foods is to be avoided.
